A friend wrote to me: "Kat, Cancer can not
survive in three environments. Oxygen, light nor an alkaline body. There are
supplements that help oxygenate the body, as well as changing an acid body
to a more alkaline body. A friend of mine (57 yo) that had full blown rectal
cancer went to a place in Arizona for cancer treatment. He had already been
given a "time of death" from the doctors in Florida. They did all these
three things and he is not only cancer free, but feeling better then he has
in a very long time. The light therapy was done with special laser lights
while submerged in water. Of course he was given vitamins, minerals and
herbs to help support the body. Some quick searches on the internet got me
some really interesting facts on oxygen, light and an alkaline body vs
cancer." So, it's worth doing some research on those topics, and
you'll find an acid/alkaline food chart below for your convenience.
CANCER STARVING DIET
Most anti-cancer
diets are based on feeding raw foods, and are formulated as low
carbohydrate, low sugar, low starch, high fat, moderate protein. Cancer
cells thrive on a sugar diet, hence the “starving” by cutting out sugars and
starches. Note that cooking destroys many of the nutrients and natural
enzymes needed to fight the cancer.

These can be found at

a dog dealing with cancer or any other health issue. Improper absorption of
or lack of assimilatible nutrients, for whatever reason, is often the
beginning of health problems.

One woman's program
for her dog's cancer (raw diet): "My herbalist outlined the Cancer Diet
for me this way for me: raw meat and bones; pureed leafy greens (should
equal a 1/3 of the amount of meat); antioxidants; probiotics; food enzymes;
shark cartilage; Essiac tea; Reishi Mushrooms. I use Call of the Wild powder
supplement (http://www.wysong.net) to balance the meat diet. The acceptable leafy greens include: broccoli,
cabbage, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels
sprouts, bok choy, occasional tomatoes, celery, lettuce. Some say zucchini
is okay. No corn, peas, pumpkin, yam, potatoes, or carrots. I also add Pau
d'arco off and on and spirulina daily. Those were suggestions from other
people. The Essiac tea comes in capsule or a concentrate liquid. My
herbalist said either would be fine. I find the capsules easier, just put
them in with the food. I used the concentrate for a while, diluted about
5ml with water and squirted it in her mouth. She wouldn't drink it on her
own. The Reishi mushrooms come in capsule also, just put them in their food.
http://www.b-naturals.com carries a supplement with the antioxidants plus,
which I am going to try."
Another client's program for her 60 lb.
dog (cooked diet): "We decided on the homemade cooked diet. Everything
is to be added slowly until you learn your dog’s tolerance for each item.
These are suggestions I’ve been given.
-
Simple carbohydrates are to be eliminated
altogether. If using grains, only brown rice and long cooking organic
oatmeal are acceptable
-
NO sugar of any kind -- that eliminates
fruits and sweet vegetables such as corn and sweet potatoes. The
occasional carrot is okay
-
Best protein source: any poultry
-
Best fat sources: flaxseed oil and salmon
oil
-
A small amount of liver once in a while is
okay, don't overdo
-
Fish: fresh is best, but canned tuna or
sardines packed in water with NO salt is fine [i.e., gently rinse
the tuna in a strainer before feeding]
-
Dairy: low fat cottage cheese and low fat
yogurt are okay
-
Tofu: makes a great treat, and is a good
protein source (get the nonflavored kind)
-
Vegetables: packaged bags of broccoli slaw
or cole slaw are okay. Good vegetables to feed are Bok Choy,
Brussels sprounts, tofu, tomatoes, sweet red peppers, raddishes, broccoli,
cauliflower, garlic, cabbage. [note: with tomatoes, you may see red
pulp and skin in the stool, this is normal]
-
Supplements, in order of importance
(available at health food stores): Greens powder; best quality human
grade multi-vitamin WITHOUT iron; beta-carotene; oriental mushrooms like
Shitake
I steam ground chicken and mix it half and
half with veggies. I use all of the
vegetables above, cook them in a large canning kettle (steamed), then put
through the blender a bit - she won't eat it any other way! Then I mix it
with an equal amount of cooked ground chicken. I make enough for two weeks
and freeze it in day size portions. I
give an antioxidant supplement with antioxidant vitamins. Add fats SLOWLY.
My girl ended up with an angry pancreas because of the level of fats. Had to
back off them and am only now starting to add them back into her diet. Here
is our diet plan after experimentation:
-
Breakfast - 7 AM: 1 cup of veggie/ground
chicken mix, 1/2 can of Canidae dog food; 1 tbsp low fat yogurt, ½
teaspoon of Solid Gold Seameal, 1 tbsp of liquid probiotic, 1 salmon oil
capsule – cut off end and squeeze contents into food
-
Lunch – about 11 AM:
1 cup of
veggie/ground chicken mix, 1/2 can of Canidae, ½ tin of tuna, ½ teaspoon
of Solid Gold Seameal, 1 teaspoon of flax seed oil, 1 Protect + (vitamin
supplement)
-
Supper – about 4 PM:
1 cup of veggie/ground chicken mix,
1/2 can of Canidae, ½ teaspoon of Solid Gold Seameal, 2 sardines, 1 salmon
oil capsule, 1 teaspoon RX Vitamins (a powder)
-
Snack - 9 PM: 1 cup of veggie/ground
chicken mix, 1/2 can of Canidae, 1 tbsp low fat cottage cheese, ½ teaspoon

Information About
Sugars in the Diet and Cancer Growth: Cancer cells thrive on sugar. The grains that are low
on the glycemic index (don’t cause a high rise in blood sugar and the
resulting insulin dump to bring it down) are long-cooking oatmeal, quinoa,
barley, and millet. There may be others, but if you need a bit of fiber in
the diet, those would be good ones to work with. However, the cancer
starving diet aims to avoid carbohydrates. If you choose to feed rice,
only feed brown rice or wild rice mixes, no white rice. The glycemic index
page:
http://www.mendosa.com/gi.htm. Actual glycemic index:
http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
See Cereals at 255, and Legumes/Nuts at 449.
Other grains are scattered throughout below that, in the foreign foods
section. You may be very surprised to see things that you thought are high
in sugar/carbohydrates are not, and vice versa. The general belief is that,
to lose weight, you need to keep glucose levels in foods to under 100 to
prevent a big insulin dump (triggered by the glucose). Insulin surges are
what cause fat storage. And the lower the glucose the better when the issue
is cancer, candida (yeast), and the like because they thrive on sugars. You
might want to consider using various legumes for part of your protein
source. You need to cook them well as the shells (skin) around them usually
don’t digest well. I mash them with a potato masher after cooking and
rinsing. Nuts are good too, but need to be raw and minced/ground for the
best benefit.
Protein and Grains/Leaky Gut Syndrome A
holistic vet, John Simon, writes articles about holistic care topics. From
one of his papers: "The more grain present in a dog's or cat's diet (even
when cooked) the more undigested (partially digested) macro-molecules of
grain protein will be found in the upper small intestine. These unacceptably
large protein molecules are viewed by the pet's immune systems as foreign
invaders that should not be there and therefore as a threat to the body.
Consequently, the immune tissue present in the intestinal wall is stimulated
to send out immune cells to destroy these large, partially digested grain
protein molecules. During the act of destroying this foreign protein, injury
occurs to the surrounding intestinal lining. As a result of chronic
stimulation of the intestinal immune system by a grain-based diet,
progressive damage is done to the lining of the digestive tract until a
problem known as "leaky gut syndrome" results. A leaky gut allows several
forms of toxic foreign material, including bacteria, bacterial toxins and
poorly digested grain protein molecules to pass out of the gut and into the
blood stream where they may ultimately contribute to the development of
allergies, arthritis, immune system suppression, autoimmune disease, and
cancer."
VegetablesAll vegetables should be
raw, and finely minced or pureed, to break the plant cell wall so the
nutrients can be readily utilized. The cancer starving diet includes a lot
of cancer inhibiting vegetables like kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower,
Brussels sprouts, tomato, and carrots [note: I would not regularly
feed carrots due to high sugar content.] “Researchers discovered a while
back that sulforaphane, a natural compound found in broccoli and broccoli
sprouts, might help prevent cancer by boosting production of certain enzymes
that fight cancer-causing agents. Now the same researchers have found that
sulforaphane also kills H. pylori, the bacteria thought to be responsible
for the majority of ulcers and stomach cancers. The biggest plus of all: It
seems to be effective even against antibiotic-resistant types of bacteria.”
[from San Antonio Express-News Parade section, November 17, 2002]
Beets – all parts – were
touted by one Master Herbalist to be very effective against cancer. Another
woman said the effect comes from the compounds that make up the red color of
beets. Do not be alarmed if you see a red tinge to the urine. Beets
are high in sugar so they should be used sparingly. She suggested
feeding a few button mushrooms per day (buy the ones with the tight “caps”)
as well as New Potatoes with the beets. The mushrooms and potatoes have the
highest level of natural enzymes, as determined by a certain cancer
researcher (the American Medical Association acknowledged his findings).
He said that by using concentrated levels of the enzymes found in the
mushrooms and potatoes, he’d cured every type of cancer in every kind of lab
animal. The nice thing about these two vegetables is that they are not high
in sugar.
Note: do not feed raw potatoes or potato
skins; they contain a compound that is toxic. Potatoes should be cooked.
Since they are a starch, they should not be a part of the cancer starving
diet. Also, raw veggies are better than cooked because cooking significantly
increases their carbohydrate level, which is something you want to avoid on
the anti-cancer diet.
Cottage Cheese and Flax OilThis combination is
supposed to inhibit the growth of tumors. See Nancy’s protocol, above, for

“Both flaxseed oil and fish oil contain alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) and
eicosapentaenoic acie (EPA) which are omega-3 fatty acids. Although not
specifically mentioned in this article, fish oil also contains DHA. Do not
use these oils for cooking, as they should not be heated. Dr. Joanna Budwig
of Germany many years ago proposed that a diet which began each day with
flaxseed oil and (low fat/low salt) cottage cheese, quark or yogurt could
help fight and prevent cancer. The flaxseed oil provides the above mentioned
ingredients plus more, while the cheese product provides sulphur. Together
they create a powerful substance that Dr. Budwig thinks will matter.”
http://www.goldtoporganics.com/drbudwig.htm “Dr. Budwig is
internationally recognized as the world's leading authority on fats and
oils. She was one of the first to realize the detrimental effect of
processing methods on essential fatty acids. . . After three decades of
research Dr. Budwig, a six-time nominee for the Nobel Award, found that the
blood of seriously ill cancer patients was always, without exception,
deficient in certain important essential ingredients which included
substances called phosphatides and lipoproteins. (The blood of a healthy
person always contains sufficient quantities of these essential ingredients.
However, without these natural ingredients cancer cells grow wild and out of
control.) Blood analysis showed a strange greenish-yellow substance in place
of the healthy red oxygen carrying hemoglobin that belongs there. This
explained why cancer patients weaken and become anemic. This startling
discovery led Dr. Budwig to test her theory. She found that when these
natural ingredients where replaced over approximately a three month period,
tumors gradually receded. The strange greenish elements in the blood were
replaced with healthy red blood cells as the phosphatides and lipoproteins
almost miraculously reappeared. Weakness and anemia disappeared and life
energy was restored. Symptoms of cancer, liver dysfunction and diabetes were
completely alleviated. Dr. Budwig then discovered an all natural way for
people to replace those essential ingredients their bodies so desperately
needed in their daily diet. By simply eating a combination of just two
natural and delicious foods not only can cancer be prevented but in case
after case it was actually cured. (These two natural foods, organic flax
seed oil & cottage cheese) must be eaten together to be effective since one
triggers the properties of the other to be released.) After more than 10
years of solid clinical application, Dr. Budwig's natural formula has proven
successful where many orthodox remedies have failed. Dr. Budwig's formula
has been used therapeutically in Europe for prevention of: Cancer!
Arteriosclerosis, Strokes, Cardiac Infarction, Heartbeat (irregular), Liver
(fatty degeneration), Lungs (reduces bronchial spasms), Intestines
(regulates activity). Stomach Ulcers (normalizes gastric juices), Prostate (hypertopic),
Arthritis (exerts a favorable influence), Eczema (assists all skin
diseases), Old age (improves many common afflictions), Brain (strengthens
activity), Immune Deficiency Syndromes (multiple sclerosis, autoimmune
illnesses) Thousands have flocked to hear Dr. Budwig lecture all over
Europe. The many people Dr. Budwig's formula has helped testify to the
benefits of her remarkable discovery.” Testimonials:

http://www.sunkistpoodles.com/HolisticCancerTherapy.html “In the August
2000 issue of Whole Dog Journal, there is a great article written by Barb
Hamlin, a dog owner from Michigan. Hamlin tells the story of her German
Shepherd's recovery from soft tissue cancer -- which did NOT involve
chemotherapy or radiation. Instead, Hamlin employed a nutritional approach
she found on the internet. . . . This approach was developed by a German
scientist, Dr. Joanna Budwig, who has written several books about her
successes in treating all sorts of cancers with a supplement made of cottage
cheese and flax oil. Dr. Budwig's most recent book is 'Flax Oil As A True
Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Disease, Cancer, and Other Diseases'.
Hamlin gave her dog 1/4 cup of low fat
cottage cheese and 1 1/2 tablespoons of Barlean's Organic Flax Seed Oil two
times a day, as well as supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin E, juiced
vegetables, and digestive enzymes. She also fasted her dog once a week, and
withheld any vaccinations or chemical flea or tick treatments. Within three
months, the tumor had completely disappeared. As of October 2000 Barb
reports that Diamond is doing great! Hamlin describes her protocol
thoroughly in the WDJ article, which is available for purchase from the
publisher, Belvoir Publications (800-424-7887,

Acid/Alkaline (pH)
Issue
It is thought that cancer thrives in an
acidic environment. A dog's normal body pH is 6.2-6.5. It is important to keep the pH high, so look to adding
alkalizing foods to the diet. pH can be tested by pH strips available at
pharmacies, and testing the urine is best (catch the first morning urine by
placing a long handled plastic kitchen ladle under the animal). If all else
fails, you can try testing saliva, I think this will be as accurate but
can't state definitively that this is so.

Antioxidants are important,
so add grapeseed oil to his/her diet as well (high in antioxidants)
Herbs
Artemisinin is also known
as the herb Sweet Wormwood. It was originally used to treat Malaria.
Artemesinin must be used with caution, so please see at least the archives
of the CanineCancer or artemisinin_and_cancer groups at groups.yahoo.com for more information. You can also search the web and
find a bit of information about this. Note that much discussion has
taken place on the Artemisinin chatlist (see end of this Artemisinin section
for information) about the importance of keeping the pH in an alkaline state
(i.e., above 7.4). This may be especially true if Artemisinin is to work
properly.
Whole Dog Journal
ran an article titled "New Hope for Treating Cancer: Some Dogs
Successfully Treated With Herbal Extract, Still Under Research" in the
May 1, 2003 issue. You can order it by going to their site at
http://www.whole-dog-journal.com
or by clicking on this link:
http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/pub/6_5/features/5538-1.html. The
article includes cases of treating end stage cancer, and additional research
information.
"We
discovered that when Artemisinin comes into contact with the iron in the
hemozoin," reports Dr. Meshnick, "the iron converts the Artemisinin into a
toxic chemical, releasing a free radical that destroys the [malaria]
parasite." Whole Dog Journal goes on to state, "Artemisinin's
reaction to iron molecules interested research professors Henry Lai, PhD,
and Narendra Singh, MBBS, at the University of Washington in Seattle because
cancer cells, like malaria parasites, collect and store iron. 'Cancer cells
need extra iron to replicate DNA when they divide,' explains Professor Lai.
'As a result, cancer cells have a much higher concentration of iron than
normal cells. When we begin to understand how Artemisinin works, I wondered
if we could use that knowledge to target cancer cells.' Please note that "Artemisinin
should not be combined with radiation therapy because radiation treatments
release iron stored in cancer cells to surrounding tissue. For best results,
patients are encouraged to wait until at least two months after their last
radiation treatment before beginning Artemisinin."
This is not to say that radiation treatments
are a requirement prior to using Artemisinin; and the substance is
compatible with chemotherapy. For canine cancer research information,

Tetracycline and Bone Cancer (Osteosarcoma)
Dr. Singh, a noted researcher, has discovered over the past four years that
tetracycline is not only effective at preventing metastases from forming in
bones, it also has the ability to kill tumour cells in the bone as well. One
man whose Doberman was diagnosed with bone cancer worked with his vet using
this protocol -- in this dog's case, 250mg. tablets, 3 capsules 4 times a
day. Time passed and an xray eventually showed that the mass in the bone was
almost gone.

Here's a message I received from Diana P: I
saw your site when I was researching bone cancer. My pit bull Chester, was
diagnosed with a bone tumor two months ago. I found your site and found the
info on Tetracycline, and had it prescribed to her at two 250mg tablets,
four time daily [note: the animal's size dictates how much should be
administered]. It has been six weeks and the x-rays showed the
tumor is almost gone!!! The before x-ray showed a lot of bone density was
missing, and the new one, shows it is almost back to normal. I can't believe
it. I do think early detection is a huge factor in all of this, however. I
do not know if this treatment would work if the cancer was more advanced or
not. Chester was not limping at all. I just had a suspicion to have her
x-rayed.
Alfalfa and Red Clover Both of these
herbs have alkalizing properties, which is important when treating cancer.
The body should be in a more alkaline state (higher pH) because cancer
thrives in an acidic environment. To learn about the properties and use of
these herbs, I recommend the books Herbs for Pets or The Complete
Herbal Handbook For the Dog and Cat, both of which can be found on my
Books-Holistic Care page.

human immune system, balance critical hormone levels and blood sugar, help
you to maintain proper digestive function, balance acid/alkaline levels of
the body, improve inter-cellular communication and soothe cell membranes,
especially of the respiratory and digestive systems. All of these things are
important for maintaining youth, health and vitality. This traditional
herbal tea also has efficacy for detoxification and balancing of the body
after it has been stressed by poor diet and an unhealthy environment.
Research has shown that even those undergoing conventional medical
treatments demonstrate many positive results with this tea. A literature
review conducted by the University of Texas Center for Alternative Medicine
Research (UT-CAM) identified 107 references on the principal herbs used in
Flor•Essence®. Clinical trials concluded that Flor•Essence® is an effective
treatment for chronic gastrointestinal problems. They recommend the tonic as
the basic treatment for chronic non-healing erosions of the gastric mucosa.
The tea preparation is well tolerated and recommended for use in clinical
practice for the complex treatment of many health problems.

NOTE: Essiac should not be
used in animals who have renal (kidney) problems because it contains two
herbs which are contraindicated for such cases.
Fish Oils
(EPA and DHA) These oils are important because they are readily absorbed and
easily utilized by the body.
Squalene Sharks do not get cancer. For several years Johns
Hopkins had a research team studying the biochemistry of sharks to determine
why. Unfortunately, they lost their grant before the studies were completed.
All tumors have to develop their own blood supply in order to grow. Squalene
seems to interfere with that process, according to New Zealand studies. The
research for Squalene is very interesting, and if the drug companies here
could make money on it, you would see it as front page news. This article
does talk about shark cartilage, but clinical findings were not as good as
some claims. This does go over some finding about restricting blood flow to
tumors, which has the conventional medical community very excited.

Reishi and other
Chinese Mushrooms [See first cancer case on previous page for
dosage.] Consider feeding other Chinese mushrooms as well, or . . . purchase
MGN-3, a potent immune complex supplement (concentrated Chinese mushroom
extract from Reishi, Shiitake and other mushrooms). Boosts natural killer
cell activity three-fold over IP-6 (available over the counter); boosts
T-cell and B-cell activity two-fold (IP-6 does not affect T or B cells).
MGN-3 is made by Lane Labs (800-526-3005).
Vitamin B-17 An herbal
supplements representative told me about Vitamin B-17 which comes from
Apricot kernels. It is claimed that this vitamin has anti-cancer properties.
The products are imported from the Bahamas. See
www.vitaminB17.de to order, and
www.1cure4cancer.com for more
information, or contact Allan at 800-520-0071.
Vitamin C Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine. I recommend
TwinLab Super Ascorbate C instant vitamin C concentrate (powder), which can
be purchased at health food stores. It is a pure blend of vitamin C (from
five mineral ascorbates), with lemon bioflavonoids, rose hips, acerola,
rutin and hesperidin. Give to bowel tolerance (start with 1/8 tsp and slowly
increase until stools get a bit soft, then back down a bit). Any extra that
the animal doesn’t need is excreted through the urine.
Honey ”Honey, especially dark honey, provides the same
antioxidant punch as some fruits and vegetables. Researchers from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that blood samples taken
from people who consumed 4 tablespoons of honey once a week for five weeks
contained more antioxidants. These people also had less damage that leads to
clogged arteries. Buckwheat honey was the darkest and most effective at
boosting antioxidant levels in the study.” [from San Antonio
Express-News, Parade section, November 17, 2002] Honey is also a natural
antihistamine, helping desensitize the body to plant based allergens. Note
that you must purchase locally harvested honey so that the pollens the bees
use to make the honey are those that your animals are exposed to. Add 1 tsp
(small dog) to 2T (large dog) to their food a day.
Apple Cider Vinegar ACV is an acid that can normalize pH. It’s
most effective to use the organic ACV with the “Mother” in it (will have
small brown particles floating in the liquid). You can find it at most
health food stores, or at
http://www.bragg.com/ For information about ACV on the Bragg's site, see
http://www.bragg.com/health_info/ea_acv.html and
http://www.bragg.com/products/applecidervinegar.html One teaspoon twice a day is
recommended for a 50 lb. dog, per Wendy Volhard, author of Holistic Guide to
a Healthy Dog.

Parasite Eradication and Liver Cleanses
http://www.outoftheearth.com/medium.htm I offer this website for
informational purposes, as there is discussion about parasites and toxin
overload possibly contributing to cancer development. However, I believe
giving so many supplements/tinctures at one time is overload – that is,
sometimes too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. There are simpler
programs which can achieve the same effect (eradicating parasites and
cleansing the liver), such as the North American Herb and Spice products,
Oreganol or Oregacyn. See my NAHS page
for more information.
Milk Thistle X brand is supposed to be a fantastic "liver
healer" (by Enzymatic Therapy, recommended by a holistic vet as probably the
top brand). The July 2002 Whole Dog Journal magazine contained an
article, “Saving Your Liver,” about the use of Milk Thistle. The amount and
form used (powder, liquid extract, capsule) should be determined by your
veterinarian. Short term use (weeks) is safe, but long term use of high
doses of this herb may eventually suppress liver function. To purchase a
copy of the July 2002 edition or to subscribe to the Whole Dog Journal, see
www.whole-dog-journal.com
Antioxidants
These are extremely important in fighting cancer. Make sure the product you
give contains selenium, as there is some evidence that dogs with cancer are
low in selenium. One recommended brand is Solgar's Advanced Antioxidant
Formula. For a 60 lb. dog, give half the human adult dose per day. Adjust
according to size. See Solgar's website for more information:

Cansema Salve,
Capsules and Tonic Cansema has been touted to cure skin cancers and
mammary and mast cell tumors among others. For a story regarding a donkey

Bupleurum is a Chinese herbal product which is well known for
deeply cleansing the liver. As Chinese herbal medicine is a specialized
healing art, I recommend you seek out a veterinarian who is qualified to
prescribe the appropriate blends. See the Institute for Traditional Medicine
link under Cancer Links, below, for a non-inclusive lists of veterinarians
who incorporate the use of Chinese herbs in their practice.
Breast Milk/Colostrum Breast
milk is antibacterial. Human breast milk also kills cancer cells. (Discovery
magazine, June 1999) Dr. Catharina Svanborg in Sweden was studying
antibacterial properties and found that the cancer cells were "committing
suicide" when exposed to breast milk. Here are several studies and
articles about it:
